How To Write A Letter To A Deployed Service Member
Many children want to send drawings or colored pictures to service members. The service members love receiving them. In fact it reminds them of who they are protecting back home. So let them draw or color and send them to us to include in boxes.
When writing a service member remember they are not all soldiers. Some are Navy or Air Force. So the best opening to write is either Dear Hero or Dear Service Member. By using one of those two headings they can be sent in anybody’s box.
Thank the person for serving our country. It is also nice to tell them why you are saying thank you. It may be because you served yourself or it may be because you understand they are keeping our country safe.
The service members love to know who is writing. Maybe enclose a nice picture of the class or the family. Tell them about the state you live in or about your school. The service member was a student at one time; they just like to think of home.
Don’t ask if they have been hurt, or insult them please. Try to refrain from making comments about the war as they hear and see that every day. They want to hear of home, maybe of how the flowers are all in bloom or how the cat had kittens, something that will make them smile. They like to read things that show support from their neighbor.
Sign your card or letter and you may include your address or your school address if you wish. If they have time maybe they will write, but remember they are in a war zone and do not have a lot of free time. If it is your class that is writing give the school address so if they do write their response can be shared with the entire class.
You may include a self addressed envelope with a blank piece of paper in it. This way they have it, as not every service member has paper and envelopes on hand. They do not need a stamp, as they mail letters for free.
We ask that you do not seal your envelopes as we must inspect them. In fact you do not need to place them in an envelope at all, as we place them in boxes with other items. They are not sent to one person; we ship to many service members so we make sure each has a letter or card in it.
If you wish to have us send them for you, please send them to:
SKIP, Inc.
PO Box 276
East Bridgewater, MA 02333
Please include an email address or a return address so we can let you know when it is received, especially if multiple letters. Thank you and we hope to receive a message from you to forward on to those deployed military members that miss being home.
