SKIP Leaves America Supports You

SKIP has discontinued its affiliation with America Supports You (ASY) due to a recent Inspector General's report revealing questionable actions by senior staff of ASY.

Stretching the Dollar

Each year SKIP searches for new ideas to raise the funds necessary to ship care packages to deployed US military members. This year, despite knowing that money is tight across the nation, we still need to raise the funds. How much money do we need? Well, let's talk about this for a minute.

In 2008 more than $14,000 of wonderful contributions were spent at the Post Office to cover shipping costs for the care packages. By the end of 2009, with an increase in postage rates (going up to $10.30 per care package on Monday, January 19) and hopefully an increase in the number of military members supported by SKIP, we expect those costs to increase to roughly $16,000. Postage for the care packages is, without question, the highest cost this organization incurs every year. And it's one expense that we can't cut back in 2009.

Introducing SKIP's $1 Campaign For the Troops

Here's how it works:
  • You donate $1 either online or by mail
  • You have 3 of your friends to do the same
  • Each of your friends has 3 others donate $1
  • Each of them has 3 people donate $1
  • And it continues until someone breaks the chain

Show Your Support: Donate Now

Math Problem of the Day:
If 20 people donate $1 each on the first day, each of them have 3 of their friends donate $1 the next day, each of those people have 3 of their friends donate $1 the following day, and the number of daily participants continues to follow this same pattern every day after that, at the end of 10 days how much money would SKIP have?

I had no idea... so, I asked SKIP Board Member Jen Witt, who's also a high school math teacher, for help with this one...

Correct Answer: $156,397,220 and zero cents
Imagine all the care packages we could send with that much money!

Total cost to you: $1 or $1.42 if you mail it in, and 10-15 minutes of your time asking three of your friends to throw a dollar in to help support the troops by participating in this $1 campaign.

Our Goal: At least $16,000 by February 15, 2009

From the Troops: Letter of the Month

Dear friends at SKIP,
I wanted to take the time to thank you and all those at SKIP for their support of our deployed soldiers. We have just returned home from our deployment, and we wanted to let you know that we truly appreciate all the care and concern your organization has shown us. The care packages you sent throughout our deployment provided us with both the necessities of life and a way to relax during often long and difficult days.

All of us here take pride in the work we are doing, and believe that our partnership with the Iraqi Army and Iraqi Police is the key to providing lasting security for this country. I've attached a few photographs from the soldiers here in [our unit] and our operations [in Iraq] - feel free to use them at all your functions.

Thanks again for all your support!

V/R,
C.K.
