Ways to Show Your Patriotism
Shortly after 9/11, the flag was everywhere: on poles, in windows, on cars. Time may have healed some of our wounds from the event. However, as time has lapsed, so has that sense of pride. Why is it that we don’t see that flag flying as much now?
A life-changing event shouldn’t have to dictate your level of patriotism. Saluting your country has no season. Adding a flag to your yard or window is certainly a simple way to show support. It is an honor and privilege to be an American; don’t be afraid to flaunt it! Here are a few other ways to get active and show your love for the land you call home...
Contact the USO. The USO (United Service Organizations) is the granddaddy of all support organizations for our U.S. military. There are currently over 130 centers around the world looking for volunteers to do a variety of tasks, whether it’s serving snacks, helping soldiers find connecting flights or welcoming someone home.
Buy American. There is no better way to show your love and support for this country than to buy its products. Many shop local shop owners go out of their way to stock shelves with American-made goods. Invest in your neighbors and know where your hard-earned money goes!
Stand Up for Stand Down. Stand Down is an organization that helps out homeless and wounded veterans. Buy groceries, mow someone’s lawn, pay a month’s worth of mortgage, or even help baby-sit for a few hours. If your town doesn’t have a Stand Down organization, you can even get one started.
Read the Constitution. Don’t just be proud of your country’s history. Learning about the ideals that created this country can help you make decisions when election time comes.
Put Your Talents to Work. What you do best can help serve your country. Do a web search for organizations. For instance, Bugles Across America is looking for those that play a brass instruments, while Heartmade Blessings is always looking for a few nimble fingers to crochet projects for veterans.
Go Online. You probably go online everyday, making this one a real no-brainer. Exercise that freedom of speech by starting a blog or going to Twitter to show support for your country and spread the word on ways to be patriotic.
Support SKIP. Joining SKIP’s efforts is a friendly, fun way to show your love for this country. Stop by one of our events or drop us a line. Whether you donate money, time, goods, services or all the above—we appreciate whatever you want to contribute!
